Stretching Before and After Skiing: A Podiatrist’s Advice

Winter is the ideal season for outdoor activities like skiing, which invigorate both body and mind. To prevent injuries and maximize your skiing experience, PiedRéseau podiatrists recommend proper warm-up and stretching routines.

Why Warm Up Before and Stretch After Skiing?

Warming up before skiing increases blood flow, lubricates joints, strengthens the heart, and prepares the body for intense exercise. Stretching after skiing helps muscle recovery, reduces soreness, and enhances flexibility for future sessions.

Warm-Up Exercises Before Skiing

Effective warm-ups target the whole body, focusing on the legs, which carry most of the effort on slopes.

Full-Body Warm-Up

Begin with arm circles to activate your upper body: swing arms forward and backward about 10 times each. Balance with hands on hips, then swing each leg forward and back.

Hip Warm-Up

With feet shoulder-width apart, hands on hips, rotate hips in smooth circles forward and backward 10 times each.

Leg Warm-Up

Widen stance and perform lateral squats by bending one knee while keeping the other leg straight, alternating sides for about 10 reps per leg.

Stretching Exercises After Skiing

Post-skiing stretches relieve muscle tension, reduce soreness, and support faster recovery.

Quadriceps Stretch

Stand tall, bend one leg backward holding the ankle, gently pull foot toward your body to stretch the thigh’s front. Hold, then switch legs.

Calf Stretch

In a lunge position, keep the back heel on the ground to stretch the calf. Hold and repeat on the other side.

Hamstring Stretch

Place one leg forward with heel down and straight leg, slightly bend the other and lean forward on bent leg. Feel the stretch along the straight leg’s back. Switch sides.
