5 foot-strengthening exercises

Strengthening your feet is essential, especially after reduced activity during the pandemic. Working from home and limited mobility have left many feet weakened. Discover 5 effective foot strengthening exercises to regain strength and flexibility.

Softening the foot’s arch

The plantar fascia, a ligament connecting the heel to the toes, supports the foot’s arch. Excess pressure can cause it to bulge, leading to pain and inflammation. Before strengthening, increase foot flexibility by making circular motions with your big toe while sitting. Perform clockwise and counterclockwise circles for 20 seconds, three times per foot.

Relaxation of the plantar fascia

Stretch your plantar fascia by facing a wall, pressing your heel close to it, and placing your toes at a 45-degree angle against the wall. Lean forward while keeping the other foot on the floor and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 2 to 3 times daily for each foot to feel tension relief in your calf and arch.

Balance as foot strengthening exercise

Balancing on one foot strengthens your feet, calves, and ankles. Use a chair or wall for support if needed. Stand on one leg, hold your balance as long as possible, and repeat with the other foot. Aim for 3 sets of 20 seconds per foot, increasing time as your strength improves.

Toe flexion as foot strengthening exercise

Improve toe mobility by picking objects—like pencils or marbles—with your toes. Alternatively, use a towel: place your foot about 4 inches from the edge, grip the towel with your toes, pull it toward you, and push it back. Perform around 10 repetitions per foot.

Foot massage

Finish your routine with a foot massage using a tennis ball, water bottle, or roller. Roll the object from heel to toe underneath your foot, applying gentle pressure one toe at a time. Perform this massage for 3 to 5 minutes per foot for relaxation and muscle activation.
